Donegal Family Support Service

This programme supports family members who have a relative with a problem with alcohol or other drugs.

What is Donegal Family Support Group?

Donegal Family Support Service seeks to support adult family members affected by a loved one’s substance use through the 5 Step Method. The 5 Step Method is an evidence-based, brief psychosocial intervention that is both simple and effective.

The 5 Step Method is grounded in rigorous research and a clear theoretical model which underpins the intervention. It recognises that family members are not solely supporters for their loved one but are people who need support for themselves in their own right.

How it works

The service is delivered, by accredited trainers who have completed the 5 Step Training. It is a one-to-one support service.
The five steps are:
  1. Listening
  2. Providing relevant information
  3. Discussing coping
  4. Discussing social support
  5. Directing family member to other appropriate help

Individuals can self-refer to the service or be referred by a health professional.
