Speaker Niamh McDaid (Development Worker for MaCYSS):
Niamh was keen to highlight the importance of the new resource ‘MaCYSS is the first under 18s service of its kind in this region and the training resource has been developed as a way of building awareness and promoting training in the areas of alcohol and other drugs for parents, for youth workers, teachers and anyone involved in promoting and protecting the well-being of young people’
This new online resource aims to increase skills and understanding of alcohol and other drug issues, and of issues that are closely related including mental health promotion and suicide prevention. The resource includes foundational, accredited, and professional level training, with both free and payment required courses available.
MaCYSS (Monaghan & Cavan Youth Substance Support Project):
A service for young people aged 12 – 18 years and their families who are concerned about their alcohol and other drug use, an issue which is a concern for many families across the counties of Cavan and Monaghan.
From our recent rapid assessment report carried out in Cavan and Monaghan last year, one of the key priorities/recommendations was to build skills, capacity and training in the area of alcohol and other drugs. Everyone; from parents, teachers, youth workers, statutory services to young people themselves has a role to play in reducing the levels of alcohol and other drug harm in the region. Many working in services and support organisations may already have extensive knowledge and experience in the area of alcohol and other drugs. The online training resource will be a user friendly and an accessible directory both for those who are completely new to this area of study and for those who may already have knowledge, skills or indeed a qualification relating to alcohol and other drugs. The training resource will be available on Alcohol Forum Ireland’s website from Wednesday June 8th.
MaCYSS Youth and Family service offers a range of supports including:
- One to one support with a trained Therapeutic Practitioner
- Developing a personalised young person’s plan for those availing of the service
- Information and education
- Group programmes and activities
- Working with the family
- Identifying and linking in with other supports needed
