Non-Violent Resistance (NVR)
The restoration or recovery of parental authority, supporting parents/carers in preventing and responding to the controlling and violent behaviour of child and adolescents.
What is NVR?
Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) is a brief, systemic and cognitive behavioural response to child to parent violence.
Child to parent violence is an abuse of power through which children & young people aged 18 years of age and younger coerces, controls or dominates others in the family. In practice a child or adolescent’s behaviour should be considered violent and abusive if family members feel controlled, intimidated or threatened by it & feel they must adapt their own behaviour because of threats or use of abuse or violence.
The NVR programme looks at restoration or recovery of parental authority, supporting parents/carers in preventing and responding to the controlling and violent behaviour of child and adolescents. The parents must commit to non violence over the course of the programme.
How it works
NVR is delivered with parents/guardians individually or in a group setting for up to 10 sessions. It is delivered by trained practitioners who support the parents/guardians over the course of the programme.
Families can be referred on the programme by Community, Voluntary and Statutory organisations working with and supporting families including schools, youth groups, family support agencies, mental health services, etc.
Where it is available
NVR is available to families across Donegal.
Who can take part
NVR is available to parents/guardians with children under the age of 18 years old.
